Karlštejn Castle

A Gothic castle built by Emperor Charles IV in the years 1348 - 1357 to house relics and imperial, later also Czech coronation jewels. In the years 1520 - 1530 a burgravé s house was built and in the years 1587 - 1596 the castle was restored by the architect U. Aostali. A reconstruction of the Gothic castle was carried out in the years 1887 - 1899 by B. Schmidt and after his death in 1891 by the archi­tect J. Mocker. In the interiors, the Chapel of the Virgin Mary and St. Catheriné s Chapel with precious frescos and a portrait of the builder are preserved in their original appearance. In the large tower the Chapel of the Holy Rood, consecrated in 1365, adorned with pictures of saints by Master Theodorik. The access to the Chapel of the Holy Rood is restricted due to the maintenance of these unique works of art. It has been suggested that the Karlštejn Castle should be included in the UNESCO List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
